Competition Support

Competition Support Volunteer Requirements

Minimum age: 18

Committee shift requirement: 12 hrs.

Volunteers must be able to serve full day shifts (start/end of play)

  • Volunteers are encouraged to do multiple shifts as this improves familiarity/proficiency and improves the performance of Competition Support as a group.

Volunteers must complete the following training prior to the tournament.

  • Individual online training of approximately one hour
  • In-person/virtual training session that occurs the week prior to the tournament.

Competition Support Volunteers will be a part of the ShotLink 2.0 Scoring System new for 2024. With this evolution of technology, volunteers will no longer be operating tablets or fairway lasers. The volunteer role will be like that of a Spotter, but more in-depth and managed differently. The role is known as Shotlink Mobile Spotter (SMS).

ShotLink 2.0 will feature 3 cameras around the green, 2 cameras in the fairway, one camera on the tee, and trackman radars on all tees and greens. With the enhancement of the camera technology and trackman radars, ShotLink 2.0 will be able to send predictive endpoints on tee shots and approach shots. In addition, the fairway cameras will track shots in the fairway. The PGA TOUR Scoring Techs will be stationed on each Par 4 and Par 5 hole and some Par 3’s dependent upon hole difficulty, the layout of the hole, and camera tracking. Rather than communicating with the Producers in the ShotLink Truck via radio, all communication will now be through the Scoring Techs. ShotLink Mobile Spotters will continue to use their golf knowledge to assist PGA TOUR Staff in delivering timely and accurate information around the world.

SMS volunteers will need to be mobile and able to stand for their shift.

  • These positions require a basic knowledge of the game of golf, as well as a commitment to timeliness, accuracy, and diligence.
  • Spotters are expected to be mobile and walk as necessary to locate shots in their designated area (normally one side of a golf hole).
  • They should be capable of standing/walking for the duration of their shift in a variety of weather conditions. Chairs will be provided, but as the assignment name indicates, mobility is key during tournament play.
