2003 marked the kickoff of an annual campaign to recognize over 2,600 volunteers from the Memorial Tournament's Women's Division who selflessly dedicate their time for their love of children and passion for golf. The Memorial Tournament, in conjunction with Dispatch Group Marketing Solutions and Children's Hospital, created the Volunteer of the Year campaign. In 2004 Roxane Laboratories has joined this community partnership to help raise awareness of this volunteer group and to recognize one individual who has exhibited exemplary service throughout the years.
In 2003 Jan Catherwood was named the first recipient of this honor. She perfectly exemplifies the dedication and undying passion that can be attributed to so many volunteers.
First learning of the Memorial Tournament from an article in The Columbus Dispatch, Jan has volunteered for the Tournament since its inception in 1976. A native of Barnesville, Ohio and now a resident of Florida, she dedicates her time every year to supporting the Memorial. At one time she was the only woman to volunteer that was not a resident of Columbus or its surrounding region.
Over the years Jan has been involved in several volunteer areas including walking scorers, courtesy cars, status boards, green-side reporters and official PGA TOUR board. She has shared her passion with others recruiting family members and friends from across the country to volunteer.
A retired schoolteacher, Jan is an avid golfer and makes it a priority to support her community in Florida. She is very involved in her church and volunteers throughout the year at various community functions. Jan was the 2003 Memorial Tournament Volunteer of the Year, recognized for her widespread commitment to serving others and incessant dedication to the Memorial Tournament.
